Life Inside The Dead Man's Curve: The Chronicles of a Public-Safety Helicopter Pilot Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from D.L. Williams -- Plus it's just fun when McDonald tells yarns about the rescues he's pulled ... : I received my copy this afternoon. I was working, and the dogs went crazy when the UPS guy came. I had no intention of doing anything other than skim it and get back to work...and then I finished it in one reading. This book will be compelling for anyone who has ever been involved or interested in public safety (police, fire, EMS), helicopter rescue, or emergency medicine. Plus it's just fun when McDonald tells yarns about the rescues he's pulled off, as well as the goofs he committed over the years. Been there/done that is pretty cliche, but this guy actually was and did. Well done. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan Stockton -- From Outside the Deadman's Curve : ...I have just experienced a helluva ride! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Thomas B Maertens, Jr -- Must read for anyone interested in aviation and/or emergency services; recommended by Master Army Aviator. : This is a great read for any aviation or emergency services enthusiast but it is a MUST read for anyone who has operated/piloted/maintained a helicopter! The author is a former Naval Aviator who spent 10 years in the Navy and logged 5,000 hours flying the T-28, T-2, H-57 and served in the Fleet with the SH-60 Seahawk. With a career change, the author moved to Austin, TX and joined the Austin/Travis County STAR (Shock Trauma Air Rescue) Flight department. This is not a typical EMS flight service but a full service public safety program. STAR Flight, in addition to the normal EMS scene and inter-hospital transfer flights, also performs police pursuits, search and rescue, water and high angle technical rescues and aerial fire fighting. The flight medics and nurses are cross trained as crew chiefs, hoist operators, rescue swimmers and high angle rope technicians. This is arguably one of the best emergency services flight units in the Nation. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2017 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Star Flight : I don't read many nonfiction books but having gone to school in Austin then returned later to work there I was intrigued by the title of this book. This narrative gives the reader incredible insight to the work of these often overlooked public servants. Most people don't think about what these people do on a day to day basis. They selflessly put their own lives on the line every time they fly a mission to save someone's life. This book gives the reader a blow by blow description of how they do it and in my opinion well worth anyone's time to read it. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Leslie -- Authentic and interesting : Before reading this book I knew nothing at all about helicopters or the people who love to fly them. I think I understand somewhat better now that it takes a special brand of human to want to do the work of a helicopter pilot, and I am happy to have had an exciting look at this exacting and dangerous occupation. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brad Taylor -- Loved it! : Maybe because I'm from Austin, but I found this to be a very entertaining book. I do remember some of the incidents that he wrote about and flew through including that 2001 flood and those fires in 2011. Texas seems to be one extreme or another and he pretty much covers everything. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2020 )
